Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Year Amid Financial Instability

The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions created to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, which he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are going up, although slowly. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
