A trader earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from non-public details of the event.

Sudden Shift in Forecasts

Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be removed from office by the month's conclusion surged in the period preceding President Donald Trump declared on the weekend that Maduro had been seized.

A single trader, which became a member last month and took four positions, all on Venezuela, earned over $436K from a modest bet of $32.5K.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Market Signals Before Announcement

Trading information shows that users estimated the likelihood of the president's removal at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

But these probabilities had increased to over 10% by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the morning of the next day, indicating a rapid movement in market sentiment right before the public announcement was made.

"That trade has all the hallmarks of a trade based on non-public details," said an industry expert.

A small number of other individuals also profited large payouts from predicting the capture.

Political Attention Intensifies

Elected officials are growing concerned.

A bill put forward on Monday aims to prohibit federal workers from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a market.

Industry Context

Prediction markets have surged in popularity in the past few years, with participants able to bet on everything from elections to politics.

This sector faced scrutiny under the last presidential term. However it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the prediction market arena.

A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits such activities of any form."
